A Place Where Everyone Belongs

We believe every person is created in the image of God and deserves to experience love, belonging, and worship in community. You and your family are welcome here — not as guests, but as part of our family. We are here to serve the Special Needs of our community at Edgewood Church.

If you're a parent: Please hear this—you don't have to do this alone. God has placed people in the body of Christ who can walk with you, pray with you, and remind you of His faithfulness when you're weary. Connection doesn't always mean big, time-consuming commitments—it can start with a text, a conversation over coffee, or someone simply sitting beside you in worship.

Families First

Our Special Needs Ministry is, first and foremost, a ministry for families. We want every child and parent to feel seen, valued, and supported from the moment they arrive. Our goal is to come alongside each family, build meaningful relationships, and discover how we can best support their unique needs.
Our sensory room provides a peaceful, secure space where children can receive individualized care, calming tools, and the support they need to thrive—while parents are able to participate in worship with confidence and peace of mind.
The pre-visit form and ministry walk-through are just the beginning. These steps help us understand each child’s strengths, challenges, and preferences so we can create a personalized support plan. From tailored assistance to modified Bible lessons, we are committed to helping every child encounter the love of Jesus in a way that fits them best.

Our Sensory Room

Our Sensory Room — “The Park”
“The Park” is a peaceful, child-centered space designed especially for kids who benefit from a calmer, more predictable environment. Filled with soft lighting, gentle colors, and a variety of sensory tools, this room offers a safe retreat where children can regulate, explore, and engage at their own pace. Cozy seating, fidgets, tactile toys, and movement options help kids feel grounded and supported, whether they need a quiet break or a place to warm up before joining the larger group.
Our trained Special Needs Team lovingly guides each child, helping them choose activities that meet their unique needs. “The Park” exists to ensure every child feels welcomed, valued, and fully included in our church family—so they can experience God’s love in the way that fits them best.

Kris Harris, Children's and Special Needs Ministry Director

Our church's sensory room for children with special needs was thoughtfully developed by Kris Harris, our Children’s and Special Needs Ministry Director. With degrees in Psychology and Special Education, and seven years of experience as a special education teacher, Kris brings both professional expertise and deep personal understanding to this space. Her years serving in Children’s and Youth Ministry, along with growing up with a sister who has significant special needs, give her unique insight into the challenges and hopes of families. Kris designed the sensory room to be a welcoming, supportive environment—and she continues to walk alongside families, offering counsel, advocacy, and compassionate care.  For more information, please fill out the form below.

The Sunday Experience

When children arrive at Kid’s Church, they are welcomed with warmth by a greeter and their Special Buddy, who stays with them throughout the morning. Kids are free to join the fun in the main room or ease into their day in The Park, our calming sensory space.
During large-group worship, children can participate in the way that feels most comfortable to them. We offer noise-reducing headphones, fidgets, flexible seating options, and the freedom to step into the hallway or return to The Park if the environment becomes overwhelming. Children who need movement breaks or quiet time have access to The Park at any point during the morning.
Our director also prepares modified Bible lessons tailored to each child’s learning style, allowing them to remain in their Sunday school classroom with their Buddy while still engaging meaningfully with the teaching. Visual schedules, simplified instructions, and hands-on activities are available to help kids understand what’s next and feel confident in the routine.
Whether a child thrives with extra support, sensory tools, movement breaks, or a calm place to reset, our goal is always the same: to give every child what they need to feel safe, included, and successful in their classroom.

Our Volunteers

All of our volunteers are carefully screened through recent background checks and receive hands-on training from our director to ensure they are fully equipped to serve children with compassion, understanding, and confidence. Each week, our trained volunteers offer one-on-one care and support for children who benefit from extra attention or assistance. Because every child is wonderfully different, we make it a priority to meet them exactly where they are—creating an experience that is just right for them.

Special Needs Families, We’d Love to Connect

If you are a parent or caregiver of a child with special needs, we want to know you and support you. This first step is simply a conversation. Ask questions, share concerns, or tell us about your family. There is no pressure, only a genuine desire to listen and walk with you.

Before your Visit with Us

Of you are planning a visit and feel ready, this pre-visit intake form helps us prepare well for your child. It gives our team helpful insight so we can reach out ahead of time, make thoughtful accommodations, and serve your family with care, clarity, and confidence from the moment you arrive.
